SUMMARY
Issue for Decision (Consent Agenda)
Should the Board of Regents authorize Monroe College to award the Master of Science (M.S.) degree?
Reason for Consideration
Required by State regulation.
Proposed Handling
The question will come before the Higher Education Committee at its April 2009 meeting where it will be voted on and action taken. It will then come before the full Board at its April 2009 meeting for final action.
Procedural History
In December 2008, Monroe College submitted a proposal to offer a Criminal Justice program leading to a Master of Science (M.S.) degree. The Department has determined that the program, if approved, meets registration standards. This would be the College’s first Master of Science degree program.
Background Information
Monroe College was founded in 1933 as the Monroe School of Business. In 1972, Monroe Business Institute began offering associate degrees and became Monroe College in 1990. The College is authorized to confer the Associate in Science (A.S.), Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.), Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), and Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degrees. It offers programs in the discipline areas of Business, Education, the Health Professions, the Physical Sciences, and the Social Sciences.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the Board of Regents authorize Monroe College to award the Master of Science (M.S.) degree.
Timetable for Implementation
If the Board of Regents authorizes Monroe College to award the Master of Science (M.S.) degree, the Department will register the Criminal Justice program and the College will proceed to recruit and enroll students for it.
