SUMMARY:
In April, we provided you with data that looked at graduation rates and the results of student performance on the Regents examinations over time and for the 1998 cohort. At that time, we indicated that we would provide additional data for your next discussion, including data on cumulative numbers of examinations passed. These data are included in a series of charts in Attachment A.
We have developed the following questions to focus your discussion on this topic:
- What do the data indicate about repeated attempts at passing required Regents examinations? After four years, what percentage of all students in the 1998 cohort, general-education students, and students with disabilities scored 55-100 after multiple tries? (See Charts 1-3.)
- After four years, what percentage of all students in the 1998 cohort, general-education students, and students with disabilities scored 65-100 on the four required Regents examinations after multiple tries? (See Charts 4-6.)
Data included in the attached charts were provided by districts and submitted to the Department using the new STEP electronic data collection system. Districts did not always have a complete Regents exam history available for all students. For that reason, the accompanying charts may underestimate the number of attempts that students made before they achieved a criterion score of 55 and 65.
We anticipate providing additional data at your September and October meetings. The Board is schedule to make a decision on whether to continue to change its policy on the passing score on Regents examinations in November.
