Proposed Handling
This question will come before the full Board at its May 2010 meeting where it will be voted on and action taken.
Background Information
On March 23, 2010, the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees adopted the following resolution:
Resolved that the Chancellor be, and hereby is, directed to seek the authorization of the Board of Regents for the Fashion Institute of Technology to confer the degree of Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.).
On April 2, 2010, the Department received the Fashion Institute of Technology’s proposal from the State University of New York System Administration requesting registration of an Illustration program leading to the M.F.A. degree.
Approval of this resolution will authorize the Fashion Institute of Technology, Seventh Avenue at 27th Street, New York, New York to confer the additional degree of Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) subject to the approval of the Board of Regents. Degree authorization is necessary as the award represents first use of the M.F.A. degree title. Authorization by the Board of Trustees and the Board of Regents will allow the approval of programs leading to the M.F.A. degree.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the Board of Regents authorize the Fashion Institute of Technology to confer the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) degree on duly qualified students successfully completing its registered M.F.A. programs effective May 17, 2010.
