SUMMARY
Issue for Decision (Consent Agenda)
Should the Board of Regents authorize the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York to confer the additional degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) at State University of New York at Stony Brook?
Reason(s) for Consideration
Required by State statute
Proposed Handling
This question will come before the Higher Education and Professional Practice Committee at its January meeting where it will be voted on and action taken. It will then come before the full Board at its January meeting for final action.
Procedural History
Section 355(1)(f) of the Education Law authorizes the State University Trustees:
to grant all degrees, diplomas and certificates which heretofore [July 1, 1948] have been granted or have been authorized to be granted upon the completion of courses of study in any state-operated institution which now is or hereafter may be in the university, prior to the acquisition of such institution by the state university, and also such other degrees as the regents may hereafter specifically authorize them to grant.
At its May 31, 2007 meeting, the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York voted that “the Chancellor be, and hereby is, directed to seek the authorization of the Board of Regents for the State University of New York at Stony Brook to award the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in Nursing Practice.” The Department received SUNY’s request on July 2, 2007
Background Information
State University of New York at Stony Brook has proposed programs in Nursing leading to the Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degree. Since the SUNY Trustees are not now authorized to award that degree at Stony Brook, Regents approval is needed. It does not represent a change in the mission for the institution, which has a long history of offering doctoral-level education in the Health Professions. The Office of the Professions has determined that the proposed programs meet the standards for registration set forth in the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the Regents take the following action:
VOTED: that the State University of New York Board of Trustees be authorized, effective January 15, 2008, to award the degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Timetable for Implementation
This approval will be effective January 15, 2008.
